Nice to meet you.
Let's Talk. Let's Create. Let's Achieve.
Hey there! I'm Deb Murphy, the founder of Murphy Freelance.
What's My Story?
Imagine a basket full of experiences: over two decades of writing, sales, aviation maintenance, business management, meditation and martial arts practice. With a degree in Electronics Engineering. And a kid. And way too many pets. That's me ... a basket full of creativity, technical skills, clarity, squirrel syndrome, and strategic thinking - all in one!
After I graduated college in 1996, I took a job as a technical writer, producing service instructions and manuals for electronic control systems and composite surfaces. The thing was, I got tired of going to the same place at the same time, every day, to do kinda the same thing. I was in a cubicle. I was bored.
In my free time, I began working on my private pilot's license, and the freedom I felt when flying was everything I desired. One day, a coworker showed me an ad in the paper for a flight seeing company that was going to Alaska for the summer and looking for an office manager. I applied. I got the job. I went to Alaska, it was AMAZING! After I returned I decided to become an aircraft mechanic. I loved working on airplanes, flying, and hanging out at the little local airport all the time. But one day, everything started to feel the same again. And I was back at the the same place I had been, getting bored with going to the same place at the same time and so on. I had started freelancing as a mechanic at this time, and ended up getting several gigs in building and property maintenance as well. I was making good money, and more importantly, I was managing my own destiny! I enjoyed planning my jobs, and having the power to determine the path I would take.
Fast forward a bit, I was living on my sailboat, and I end up taking a position on a 80' Schooner (a really big sailboat) as a backup first mate. We went sailing for about a year down the coast of mexico. I maintained the engine, repaired sails, navigated the boat, and everything in between.
When that adventure came to a close, I went back to Alaska. I worked as a freelance aircraft mechanic, and I also took on managing the maintenance of a gym facility. Freelancing was giving me the opportunity to do so many different things!
Eventually, due to a death in my family, I returned to the lower 50 and went back to work as an aircraft mechanic, taking on side jobs in many fields. I longed for my freedom, but wanted the stability of a "normal" job. But I was bored. I eventually left the position and was freelancing again, working as a personal assistant, property manager, web designer, dog sitter, mechanic, and more.
One day I was given a really big opportunity that had a lucrative salary and looked exciting. That's when I decided to transition into outside sales and began managing a territory in the San Francisco Bay Area, as a sales engineer, designing and selling pneumatic and hydraulic components to manufacturers in silicon valley. This job was so exciting, I loved going into so many different engineering departments. But lo' and behold, something was still missing. My freedom.
One thing led to another and eventually I was back to freelancing, moved to another state, took on some amazing technical writing and sales clients, and was back in control of my destiny.
This pattern seemed to keep repeating, and one day I asked myself why I never took freelancing as a "real" job? Why was it always the side job or the fill in job?
That's when it hit me. You see, I'm an entrepreneur at heart. Some of us are just built a little different, you probably know exactly what I mean if you have read this far! We don't fit into the mold of the "9 to 5". This realization is what took me to the next level, and I started taking my freelance "side job" as a career, and saw myself as a business owner and an entrepreneur, rather than a gig-based worker.
It's all perspective. Having that mindset shift is what took me to the next level. That's one of the many things I can help you with, shifting that mindset into believing that you can, and WILL, succeed at freelancing. You can create your own destiny, and do what you love!
